A good number of Chinese entrepreneurs have shown interest in investing in Bangladesh’s steel sector on the closing day of the China-Bangladesh Steel Business Summit 2024.
The summit, aimed at strengthening bilateral trade between the two countries and boosting the steel industry, was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Iron and Steel Importers Association (BISIA) and the China Alliance Exporters and Importers at the Radisson Blu Dhaka on Saturday.
BISIA President Abujar Gefaree Jewel said they arranged business-to-business meetings during the summit to develop the sector, as steel is a vital component for construction.
“A total of 50 Chinese businessmen from 24 companies and more than 300 of our importers took part in the summit. China and Bangladesh will work in joint ventures in the steel sector. The Chinese investors showed interest in investing more in Bangladesh. Now they will further discuss with us and the government authorities,” he said.
He added that they organised the first-ever summit on the steel sector in the country with the aim of encouraging Chinese entrepreneurs to increase their investment in Bangladesh.
BISIA General Secretary Alhaj Nasirullah said there is an investment of US$5 billion in the steel sector. “If Chinese entrepreneurs come forward in this sector, the economy will become stronger and more prosperous. Additionally, employment will be generated.”
China Alliance Exporters and Importers President Gend Bo said proper policy support is important for the growth of a business sector, and bureaucratic complexity, particularly in export-import processes, is also crucial.
